’90s icon Thora Birch gets chatty about starring in Realm’s new espionage thriller podcast, Overleaper

Thora Birch is revered for her roles in Now and Then, Hocus Pocus and American Beauty. Now she’s lending her voice to Overleaper, a fiction podcast about Audrey, an American soldier hunting down her doppelgänger from a parallel dimension who plans to kill the POTUS. The actress dishes the details to Us.

Q: Tell Us about Overleaper.

When I first read the script, I was immediately attached to it [because] I was playing two different roles. Audrey and her doppelgänger, the Overleaper, are only concerned about their daughter. Audrey thinks her daughter’s alive, [while] Overleaper witnessed the child’s death. It’s incredibly traumatic and leads her to want to betray all the fundamental things she’s been building her life [for]. At the end of the day, it’s all about the love of family.

Q: Perks to doing podcasts?

The fun part is that there’s a physical element to it: You put your body through certain circumstances to express certain sounds. But I don’t actually have to go through boot camp.

Q: Which past project would you revisit for a sequel or revival?

If I thought a continuation was in merit, it might be a tight tie between [Now and Then’s] Teeny and [Ghost World’s] Enid. I’d like to see them duel. They could just punch each other in the face real quick.
