Congress won’t prosecute Palmeiro

Baseball star Rafael Palmeiro will not be prosecuted on perjury charges after lawmakers said Thursday there isn’t enough evidence to prove he lied when he told Congress under oath that he had “ never used steroids” — six weeks before failing a steroid test. “ We couldn’t < nd any evidence of steroid use prior to his testimony,” House Government Reform Committee Chairman Tom Davis ( R- Va.), said in releasing a 44page report. “ That’s not a < nding of innocence, but it’s a < nding that we could not substantia­te perjury.” At issue was Palmeiro’s statement at a March 17 hearing. May 4, he failed a Major League Baseball drug test, coming up positive for an anabolic steroid.

Attorney: Urbina charged in Venezuela

Free agent right- hander Ugueth Urbina was formally charged Wednesday with attempted murder and will remain in prison while he is tried, the Associated Press in Caracas, Venezuela, reported his lawyer as saying. The 31- year-old is accused of joining a group of men in attacking and injuring < ve workerswit­h machetes and pouring gasoline on them Oct. 16. Urbina said he had nothing to do with the violence.

Tagliabue explores Calif. stadium options

NFL Commission­er Paul Tagliabue was in Los Angeles on Thursday to meet with Mayor Antonio Villaraigo­sa and Anaheim Mayor Curt Pringle on what the league terms an “ informatio­nal” mission to advance efforts toward an NFL- supported stadium being built in Southern California. Tagliabue will present a report when NFL owners meet Tuesday and Wednesday.

Red Sox, Ramirez to talk trades

The Boston Red Sox agreed to explore trading AllStar out < elder Manny Ramirez, and team Chairman Tom Werner and President L arry Lucchino have met with Ramirez’s agent, Greg Genske. Ramirez’s desire to be traded is complicate­d by his status as a 10-and- 5 player — a 10- year veteran who has been with the same team for < ve years. He cannot be dealt without his permission, so he can limit Boston’s trading partners. “ There needs to be some give and take, or some exchange of preference­s and places,” Lucchino said. “ He needs to give us some guidance.” Ramirez is owed $ 19million in 2006, $ 18million in 2007 and $ 20million in 2008, the < nal three guaranteed seasons of the $ 160million, eight- year deal he agreed to with Boston before the 2001 season.

Woods one stroke off lead at Shanghai

Tiger Woods bogeyed his last hole after hitting a tee shot into a bunker for a 7- under 65, costing him a share of the < rst- round lead Thursday in the $5 million HSBC Champions at Shanghai. Scotsman Paul Lawrie, the 1999 British Open winner, England’s Nick Dougherty and Australia’s Peter O’Malley led at 8- under- par 64.
