Police widen investigation of ex- Wisconsin official
University of Wisconsin campus police started an investigation into new misconduct allegations against a former top athletic official who resigned after he was accused of sexually assaulting a student at a Rose Bowl party.
Chancellor David Ward released a statement Monday saying campus police have been investigating new allegations against former associate athletics director John Chadima since Jan. 30. Ward didn’t specify the nature of the accusations except that they involve a male adult. The man doesn’t want to press charges, Ward said, but police decided his story was credible. Vince Sweeney, vice chancellor of university relations, declined to elaborate, saying the man came forward after the Rose Bowl accusations surfaced. “It’s a second allegation of misconduct. Even absent of a formal charge, it was felt it was prudent to continue an investigation,” Sweeney said.
Chadima’s attorney, Charles Giesen, said he didn’t know anything about the new accusations.
More for Scott:
The Pac- 12 Conference’s board of directors unanimously decided to extend the contract of Commissioner Larry Scott, giving him the opportunity to go forward with plans to reshape the league through 2016. Since taking over July 1, 2009, Scott, 47, has overseen the conference’s expansion to include Utah and Colorado. He also negotiated a landmark 12- year TV contract over the summer with Fox and ESPN worth about $ 3 billion and helped create the Pac- 12 Network.
Briefly:
Laurens County ( S. C.) Coroner Nick Nichols said Monday that he had ruled the death of Presbyterian College linebacker Kyle Allen, 21, accidental. He said the death was caused by respiratory depression because of acute alcohol intoxication. School spokesman Hal Milam said a student found Allen unconscious in a fraternity house Sunday. Allen was pronounced dead at a hospital. He played in all 11 games in 2011. . . . Alabama basketball coach Anthony Grant suspended forward Tony Mitchell indefinitely for conduct detrimental to the team. Grant said Monday that it was because of an accumulation of issues and not one incident. Mitchell is second on the team in scoring ( 13.1 points a game) and rebounding ( 7.0). . . . The University of New Mexico said walk- on quarterback Ryan Trujillo was removed from the team and advised to enter counseling. The announcement comes about two weeks after Trujillo was arrested by Albuquerque police on a domestic violence charge. He is accused of pepperspraying his girlfriend in the face. He told officers it was an accident. . . . Big East spokesman John Paquette said in an e- mail that any action taken by the league in regard to Seton Hall basketball coach Kevin Willard’s criticism of officials after Saturday’s loss to Connecticut would be handled internally by the conference. . . . The Big Ten is talking about a four- team postseason football playoff that would include semifinals on campuses and a national title game at a neutral site that could possibly be put up for bid, according to the Chicago Tribune, which cited a person with knowledge of the talks. This is one of several ideas being floated as Bowl Championship Series officials prepare for meetings this summer that will decide the format of the postseason starting in 2014. The Big Ten idea is basically a variation on the theme of the muchdiscussed plus- one model — a title game played after the bowls.
