Extensions: Wings’ home streak extension takes break

The Detroit Red Wings can continue to add to their home winning streak this week but first will try to improve their road record.

The Red Wings won their 23rd in a row at home Sunday but are .500 on the road.

Tuesday, they will visit the Chicago Blackhawks, who have won three in a row after ending a nine- game losing streak.

Goaltender Jimmy Howard ( broken finger) is expected to get the start in that game for Detroit.

The Red Wings will return home for games against the defending Western Conference champion Vancouver Canucks ( Thursday) and the Colorado Avalanche ( Saturday).

With 23 consecutiv­e home wins, the Red Wings broke the record for longest home streak, including over two seasons. That was set by the Boston Bruins more than 80 years ago.

Other games of note this week:

uphiladelp­hia Flyers at Winnipeg Jets ( Tuesday): The Jets have beaten the Flyers in their previous three meetings this season, but Philadelph­ia will have newly acquired defensemen Nicklas Grossman and Pavel Kubina in the line-up.

uboston at St. Louis Blues ( Wednesday): The defending Stanley Cup champion Bruins, whohave three wins in their last nine games, visit the team with the NHL’S second- best home record.

ucolorado at Columbus Blue Jackets ( Friday): Could this be the last time the Blue Jackets see their captain? Columbus is listening to offers for Rick Nash, and other players could be traded.

utampa Bay Lightning at Pittsburgh Penguins ( Saturday): The top goal scorer, Steven Stamkos, visits the points leader, Evgeni Malkin. Stamkos trails Malkin by four points.

The Penguins rewarded winger James Neal with a six- year, $ 30 million extension Sunday.

He has a career- best 30 goals playing on a line with Malkin.

“When you find good chemistry with a player, you want to stay with him for a long time,” Neal said before Sunday’s game.

Also Sunday, the Minnesota Wild signed center Kyle Brodziak to a three- year extension. The Minneapoli­s Startribun­e reported it’s worth $ 8.49 million.

Suspension:

Wild center Warren Peters was suspended for Sunday’s game for cross- checking Blues forward David Backes in the head Saturday.

Peters will forfeit more than $ 2,900 in pay.
