Landon Donovan signed a multiyear contract extension with the Los Angeles Galaxy, keeping the U. S. national team star with his Major League Soccer club. The Galaxy announced the deal Wednesday with Donovan, whose contract was up at the end of the season. Donovan, 31, has been with the Galaxy since 2005, winning three of his five career MLS Cup titles with Los Angeles. He is the third- leading goal- scorer in MLS history. He took a self- imposed sabbatical after the Galaxy’s MLS Cup victory in December. He returned to the Galaxy in late March. He also returned to U. S. team play last month. ... Missy Franklin, who won four swimming golds for the USA in the London Olympics, begins the first day of her fall semester today at the University of California.
