AMERICAN LEAGUE

Miguel Cabrera, Detroit Tigers: Cabrera is again atop our rankings, and this time it could be for good. Cabrera’s WAR percentage dipped two- hundredths of a point, but all that means is he’s maintaining a dizzying pace. In his last 10 games, Cabrera produced five homers, 15 RBI and a 1.210 on- base- plus- slugging percentage ( OPS). Josh Donaldson, Oakland Athlet

ics: The A’s are clinging to a playoff spot — they’re three games up on the Cleveland Indians for the final wild card — but Donaldson’s grip on the top spot has slipped. He is ranked around 12th in almost every major offensive category yet ranks sixth in WAR and still comprises a huge percentage of the A’s team WAR. So long as the A’s maintain a playoff spot, he’ll score well here.

Adrian Beltre, Texas Rangers: Beltre has two top- 10 MVP finishes in the last three years; this season is shaping up similarly. He re- enters our top five on the strength of a 1.104 OPS in his last 15 games.

Evan Longoria, Tampa Bay Rays: His 28 homers and 71 RBI back up his WAR nicely. While Wil Myers’ presence helps him in the lineup, Longoria is far and away more valuable than the next position player ( Ben Zobrist, 3.3 WAR).

Max Scherzer, Tigers: The Philadelphia Athletics and New York Yankees are the only franchises to produce different MVPs in three consecutive seasons. A Cabrera slump could open the door for Scherzer to etch his name alongside Miggy and Justin Verlander.
