QB conundrums remain unsolved
In today’s final slate of preseason games, most teams with quality quarterbacks will keep them safely on the sideline to ensure their availability for Week 1 of the season. Some clubs, however, are still trying to figure out if the quarterback to build around is even on their roster. USA TODAY Sports’ Chris Strauss selected the five worst quarterback situations in the league. 1. JEFF TUEL, BUFFALO BILLS
For all we know, the undrafted rookie from Washington State could end up being the next Kurt Warner. But it’s unlikely. Tuel looks to be the Bills’ Week 1 starter unless firstround pick EJ Manuel recovers from knee surgery in time.
2. TBD, NEW YORK JETS
Mark Sanchez? Geno Smith? Newly signed Graham Harrell? Coach Rex Ryan isn’t in a hurry to make a decision. Whoever starts, it’s not likely to go well.
3. TERRELLE PRYOR, OAKLAND RAIDERS
The former Ohio State star will start the team’s final preseason game and appears to have an edge over Matt Flynn after a strong performance against the Chicago Bears last week. There’s no questioning Pryor’s athletic ability, but can he be effective when it matters?
4. BLAINE GABBERT, JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS
Gabbert broke the thumb on his throwing hand in the second preseason game but already had done enough to win the starting job. He struggled mightily in his first two seasons, but there’s hope new offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch can help improve the 2011 first- round pick’s 53.8% career completion rate.
5. BRANDON WEEDEN, CLEVELAND BROWNS
Entering his second NFL season, Weeden should do better in new coordinator Norv Turner’s system. But he turns 30 on Oct. 14 and needs to show instant development to get up to speed with the rest of the 2012 draft’s stellar quarterback class.
