Curry, No. 4 overall pick in 2009, retires

- Staff and wire reports

Linebacker Aaron Curry, who was released by the New York Giants on Sunday, announced his retirement Wednesday on Twitter. The former Wake Forest product is among the bigger draft busts in NFL history.

He was selected fourth overall by the Seattle Seahawks in the 2009 draft. But after more than two disappointing seasons, the Seahawks traded him to the Oakland Raiders in 2011 after he lost his starting job.

He was plagued by a knee injury in 2012 and played in two games before the Raiders released him.

The Giants signed him in May, but he failed to make it through the first round of roster cuts. Dowling let go: The New England Patriots released cornerback Ras- I Dowling two years after drafting him in the second round.

Dowling played in nine games after being taken with the 33rd overall pick in 2011 out of Virginia.

He started the first two games in his rookie season before being placed on injured reserve with a hip injury.

Dowling played as a backup in the first seven games in 2012 and then went on injured reserve with a thigh injury.

New England replaced him on the roster Wednesday with rookie linebacker Ja’Gared Davis after he was waived by the Houston Texans. Mad about MRSA: When Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano was asked about the condition of his two players — guard Carl Nicks and kicker Lawrence Tynes — being treated for a staph infection, he said, “They are responding well.”

His choice of words didn’t fly with Tynes’ wife, Amanda. She tweeted a picture Wednesday of her ailing husband with an IV in his arm.

“I hear my husband is responding ‘ well’ to treatment. LOL! He’s NOT responding at all yet,” Tynes wrote.

The Bucs signed veteran Rian Lindell to kick while Tynes is out.
