ROOKIE OF THE YEAR CANDIDATES
Baseball’s rookie of the year winners will be revealed today by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America ( 6 p. m. ET, MLB Network). USA TODAY Sports’ Jorge L. Ortiz looks at the finalists, in expected order of finish:
American League
Wil Myers, Tampa Bay Rays: The Rays called up Myers in midJune, and he hit 13 homers and contributed 53 RBI in 88 games to provide a much- needed impact bat in the middle of the lineup almost from the moment he arrived.
Chris Archer, Rays: Myers’ teammate had two shutouts in July and finished 9- 7 with a 3.22 ERA.
Jose Iglesias, Detroit Tigers: He made key contributions to two division winners — the Tigers acquired him July 30 from the Boston Red Sox — but defensive excellence rarely carries the day at the ballot box.
National League
Jose Fernandez, Miami Mar
lins: Fernandez was in Miami’s rotation from Day 1 and was brilliant all season. The right- hander made the leap from Class A less than two years after being drafted out of high school. Fernandez went 12- 6 with a 2.19 ERA and averaged better than a strikeout an inning while pitching most of the season at age 20.
Yasiel Puig, Los Angeles
Dodgers: Puig, 22, captured the na- tion’s attention and sparked the Dodgers’ turnaround. Although his influence lessened as the season went along, he batted .319 with 19 home runs and a .925 on- base- plusslugging percentage in 104 games.
Shelby Miller, St. Louis Car
dinals: He won 15 games and had a 3.06 ERA but wasn’t nearly as dominant as Fernandez.
