Texans quickly give up on Reed

The Houston Texans admitted a $ 5 million mistake Tuesday. They cut veteran safety Ed Reed.

Reed, 35, signed a three- year, $ 14.875 million contract with the Texans in March with hopes of chasing another Super Bowl title. In his first 11 seasons of his career with the Baltimore Ravens, he made the Pro Bowl nine times and was named allpro on five occasions.

But the Texans have struggled during an injury- marred season, and Reed was reduced to a reserve role.

Reed went public with his displeasure after Sunday’s loss to the Arizona Cardinals, saying the Texans were outplayed and outcoached while dropping to 2- 7.

Those comments weren’t well- received by team officials. Cutting Reed — whose contract included $ 5 million guaranteed — frees up playing time for the Texans’ younger players.

All released players go through waivers after the trade deadline. Reed might draw interest, given his $ 1 million base salary, plus $ 62,500 bonuses for each week he’s active.

Bowe arrested:

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe is facing charges of possession of marijuana and speeding after being arrested Sunday.

Police in Riverside, Mo., said the officer who pulled Bowe over for driving 13 mph over the 35- mph speed limit smelled marijuana in Bowe’s 2011 Audi. Police found 14.6 grams of marijuana in the vehicle. A passenger, George A. Thompson, also was arrested. Thompson was in possession of two rolled marijuana cigarettes and told police 4.2 grams of the drug discovered in a backpack belonged to him, not Bowe.

Bowe was released from jail after posting $ 750 bond. He is to appear in court Dec. 18.

The arrest came on the final day of the Chiefs’ bye week. He participated in practice Monday in preparation for Sunday’s road game against the Denver Broncos. The Chiefs were aware of Bowe’s arrest but had made no further comment.

Bowe’s arrest was perhaps the first significant blip for the undefeated Chiefs, who have won nine games under new coach Andy Reid. New Kansas City general manager John Dorsey and Reid re- signed Bowe to a $ 56 million contract in March.

Bowe has 33 catches for 369 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Chiefs this season.

Bowe served a four- game suspension in 2009 for violating the league’s policy on performance- enhancing drugs. Arrests on charges for recreational drugs fall under the league’s substance abuse policy.

Williams released:

The San Francisco 49ers released wide receiver and return man Kyle Williams on Tuesday after three- plus seasons. He had 12 catches for 113 yards and no touchdowns this season after beginning the season as the No. 2 receiver opposite Anquan Boldin.

Williams, 25, long will be remembered for his two costly fumbles in a 20- 17 overtime loss to the New York Giants in the NFC Championship Game after the 2011 season. That included losing a fumble on a punt return in overtime that set up the Giants’ winning field goal. Williams — who had a concussion late in that season — immediately took responsibility for the mistake but received death threats and was harassed on social media.

Out:

The Green Bay Packers placed quarterback Seneca Wallace ( groin) on injured reserve Tuesday. Matt Flynn was signed to replace him.
