Marlins’ Stanton done for season

-

Miami Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton has been shut down for the rest of the season because of a wrist injury.

Manager Dan Jennings made the announcement before Tuesday’s game at the Tampa Bay Rays.

Stanton has been sidelined since June 26 with a broken left wrist. He is expected to be ready for spring training next season.

“It will be a good offseason. He’ll be back ready,” Jennings said. “There’s no thought of, that, ‘ Hey, perhaps he won’t be ready’ or any of that. It’s just going to take a little longer than was originally thought.”

Stanton was hitting .265 with 27 homers and 67 RBI in 74 games before the season- ending injury.

“He gave his best effort trying to get back,” Jennings said. “He wanted to be out playing. He just didn’t have a comfort level in that hand. The scar tissue had not completely released, and so therefore there was a strength element only that he was uncomfortable with.”

PRESIDENTIAL MEETING

Just like any other morning on a Boston Red Sox road trip, interim manager Torey Lovullo woke up and headed for the gym at the team hotel.

Only this time he met a new exercise partner during an unforgettable workout that was anything but routine.

When Lovullo arrived to lift weights, there was President Obama pumping iron in a long- sleeve T- shirt and sweats. Lovullo introduced himself and talked baseball with Obama, who was in New York this week for events at the United Nations.

Lovullo said they had a great conversation, and he asked Obama when he would be leaving town, because all the security in place was making it awfully inconvenient to come and go and even grab a cup of coffee.

After their chat, Lovullo took a photo with the president. BRANTLEY UPDATE Cleveland Indians outfielder Michael Brantley’s injury to his right shoulder injury could sideline him for the final week of the season.

Brantley was not in the lineup Tuesday against the Minnesota Twins because of soreness, and manager Terry Francona said the 2014 All- Star was being examined by an orthopedist. He got hurt last week while attempting to make a diving catch in Minnesota.

Francona said the team would wait for results from the doctor before deciding the next step, and one of them could be shutting down Brantley for Cleveland’s final seven games.

“If we need to,” Francona said when asked if Brantley could be done. “I don’t think you do it unless you need to. Again, there has to be common sense when it comes to injuries. But I also feel like the season doesn’t wind down, it comes to a crashing halt, and I’ll never change that thinking.”

“I think he was probably fighting more things than people realize,” Francona said of Brantley.

Brantley is batting .310 with 15 homers and 84 RBI in 137 games.

The Indians remain alive in the AL wild- card chase. They entered Tuesday’s action five games behind the Houston Astros for the second AL spot.
