Runner- up Casey controls destiny

-

CARMEL, IND. Paul Casey couldn’t run down Dustin Johnson in the final round of the BMW Championship on Sunday at Crooked Stick Golf Club.

But he did nail down the fifth spot in the FedExCup standings heading into The Tour Championship by CocaCola in two weeks. That means he will control his own destiny at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.

After a points reset for The Tour Championship, each of the top five players in the standings will automatically win the FedExCup and the $ 10 million bonus if he wins The Tour Championship. Anyone else in the field has to get help even if he does win the Playoff finale.

“It’s a nice little consolation prize, shall we say,” Casey said of earning the fifth spot.

He finished with a 5- underpar 67 to end up at 20 under and in second place, but Johnson also shot 67 and finished at a tournament- record 23 under.

“I’ve got a great chance if I continue to play this sort of golf,” Casey said. “If I don’t run into Dustin in two weeks, I got a great chance to maybe win the FedExCup.”

He will run into Johnson, who will lead after the reset of points. The other top five players are Patrick Reed, Adam Scott and Jason Day.

“We all know what happens if you do stay in the top five and you win at East Lake — nothing can stop you from winning the FedExCup,” Scott said. “You would be pretty unlucky if you were sixth and won East Lake and didn’t win the FedExCup, but it’s possible.”

That person in sixth? Rory McIlroy, who finished 29 points behind Casey.
