Vegas shooting survivor killed in hit-and-run
Charges are pending in hitchhiking accident
A Las Vegas man who survived the Oct. 1 mass shooting that killed 58 people was killed by a hit-and-run driver while hitchhiking, his wife says.
Roy McClellan, 52, died Nov. 17 in Pahrump, 60 miles west of Las Vegas. The Nevada Highway Patrol said McClellan was illegally walking in the right lane of a highway.
Authorities had been searching for a 2010-2013 Chevrolet Camaro after car parts were found at the scene. A Highway Patrol spokesperson was not immediately available for comment Sunday, but KSNV-TV in Las Vegas reported that the car has been found and charges are pending.
McClellan’s widow, Denise McClellan, told the station she was angry at the driver.
“I feel that he was under the influence of something, or drunk and didn’t want to get caught,” she said. “So he bailed and left my husband laying there in the street. He doesn’t deserve that.”
She said her husband had been suffering emotionally since the deadly rampage almost two months ago. Denise McClellan described how the couple ran in terror when the gunman opened fire at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival. She said her husband stopped to help some people as they fled.
Neither McClellan was wounded, but she said her husband was undergoing therapy.
“I don’t understand why he wasn’t taken at the shooting, but a month later he was taken this way,” she told KSNV. “I hope my husband found peace and he’s safe now.”
Two other survivors of the mass shooting died in a car crash in California last month. Dennis and Lorraine Carver were within a mile of their Riverside County home when their Mercedes hit a gate and burst into flames. They left behind daughters ages 16 and 20.
“My mom always said we don’t let bad things affect our lives, we move on and be happy,” their daughter Brooke, 20, said in a Facebook post after the crash Oct. 16. “Me and Madison are going to do just that by living the greatest lives we can, because that’s what they would want.”
