NFL’s Week 2 slate of games kicks off with Battle of Ohio

- – Jeff Risdon, Browns Wire

Protecting the quarterbacks will be keys to a first win for the Bengals and Browns.

8: 20 p. m. ET Thursday, NFL Network BetMGM line: Cincinnati by 5 1⁄ 2

Bengals’ keys: The Browns want to operate a balanced offense behind the running of RB Nick Chubb and the passing of Baker Mayfield. Cincinnati has the ability to shut down the passing attack, but it will take strong play from CB William Jackson and a young secondary around him. Attacking the pocket with DT Geno Atkins and DE Carlos Dunlap can help fluster Mayfield and force mistakes. Taking away the passing game will allow safeties Vonn Bell and Jessie Bates to focus on stopping the run. The offensive line and running game must protect rookie QB Joe Burrow.

Browns’ keys: The Bengals start a rookie at quarterback while LT Jonah Williams missed his rookie year with injury. They are talented but inexperienced. Cleveland DE Myles Garrett should be able to win the battle versus Williams. Garrett will help prop up an injury- riddled secondary that missed two of the top four cornerbacks on the depth chart in Week 1. Strong games from WR Jarvis Landry and TE Austin Hooper creating yards after the catch will help. Getting Mayfield in rhythm early will keep the Bengals defense on its heels. RB Kareem Hunt working out of the backfield as a receiver is something the Bengals figure to struggle to handle.

Who wins? The Browns have too much offensive talent. Browns 28- 23
