‘ Chicago 7,’ ‘ Bloods’ lead Guild nominees

- Brian Truitt

In the race to the Oscars, the thespians are spreading the love around.

Aaron Sorkin’s courtroom thriller “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” Spike Lee’s war movie “Da 5 Bloods,” Lee Isaac Chung’s Korean American family drama “Minari” and the August Wilson adaptation “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” each nabbed three nominations for this year’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, announced Thursday.

“Mank” rolled up a slew of Golden Globes nominations on Wednesday, but scored only one SAG honor: best actor for Gary Oldman. Compared with the wild swings of the Golden Globes, the SAG Awards are a good barometer for the coming Academy Awards on April 25, since actors make up the largest Oscars voting bloc.

“Chicago 7,” “Da 5 Bloods,” “Ma Rainey” and “Minari” all will vie for SAG’s top prize – outstanding cast in a motion picture, its version of best picture – against Regina King’s period piece “One Night in Miami.” (“Chicago 7” and “Bloods” also each picked up a nomination for stunt ensemble.)

“Nomadland” star Frances McDormand, who won outstanding lead female actor three years ago for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” is back in the category, along with Carey Mulligan (“Promising Young Woman”), Viola Davis (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”), Amy Adams (“Hillbilly Elegy”) and Vanessa Kirby (“Pieces of a Woman”).

The lead male actor race features the late Chadwick Boseman (“Ma Rainey”), Riz Ahmed (“Sound of Metal”), Anthony Hopkins (“The Father”), Steven Yeun (“Minari”) and Oldman.

Oldman’s co- star Amanda Seyfried banked a Globe nomination for “Mank” but missed out on a SAG nomination for supporting female actor. The SAG category is composed of Olivia Colman (“The Father”), Maria Bakalova (“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”), Yuh- jung Youn (“Minari”), Helena Zengel (“News of the World”) and Glenn Close (“Hillbilly Elegy”).

The supporting male actor contingent features Leslie Odom Jr. (“One Night in Miami”), Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Black Messiah”), Jared Leto (“The Little Things”), Boseman (“Da 5 Bloods”), and Sacha Baron Cohen (“Chicago 7”).

In the top TV categories, “The Crown” is going for back- to- back wins for drama cast against “Better Call Saul,” “Bridgerton,” “Lovecraft Country” and “Ozark,” while Emmy darling “Schitt’s Creek” will compete against “Dead to Me,” “The Flight Attendant,” “The Great” and “Ted Lasso” for outstanding comedy ensemble.

Rather than holding a live ceremony amid COVID- 19, the SAG Awards will air April 4 on TNT and TBS ( 9 ET/ 6 PT) with a reimagined one- hour special that, according to the guild, “highlights and expands on our signature ‘ I am an Actor’ opening and honors the outstanding performances of the past year.”
