Other Views: What all of America witnessed on Jan. 6
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, MSNBC:
“The trial will be done in a way that is fair but ... relatively quickly. The evidence is all out there. Who was the witness? The entire American people. ( President Joe Biden) feels an urgent need to fill some of these Cabinet positions because there is so much to do in our national security, our domestic security, our health is all at stake. ... I don’t think there’s a need for a whole lot of witnesses. We were all the witnesses. It’s different than the previous trial. We will not let the Republicans be dilatory just to delay it for its own sake.”
Timothy Naftali, CNN:
“The impeachment managers should ... build on the Nixon model to introduce a wide swath of evidence, including testimony from witnesses. In a televised trial akin to the Watergate hearings, senators could interview those witnesses, including law enforcement officers and others involved. ... The public could hear from those who financed and organized the rally. ... They could hear from participants who broke into the Capitol, learning why they thought this was a patriotic act. The impeachment managers could tell the story of the last hours of Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick ... or lay out the timeline showing who finally deployed the National Guard and when.”
The Washington Post, editorial:
“It would be perverse if rebuking Mr. Trump advanced his efforts to sabotage Mr. Biden’s presidency. ... What is already known of Mr. Trump’s action is enough to justify impeachment; but there is much we have yet to learn about how he and his administration may have encouraged the uprising or impeded a prompt response. ... Much of the conversation has been about finding a way to suitably punish Mr. Trump. That is essential. But the goal must also be to provide maximum accountability with a minimum of harm to the Biden administration.”
