Rodgers to Jets? Packers reportedly having trade talks
Aaron Rodgers could be on the move to the Big Apple.
The New York Jets have had discussions this week with Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers on a potential trade that would send the quarterback to the Jets, ESPN reported Tuesday. ESPN also reported Jets officials intend to meet with Rodgers in person.
Rodgers has yet to publicly announce his intentions for next season, which include playing again in Green Bay, playing elsewhere or retiring.
“I’m open to all honest and direct conversations. If they ( Green Bay) feel like it’s in the best interest of the team, so be it,” Rodgers said on the Aubrey Marcus Podcast last week, recapping his darkness retreat. “That wouldn’t offend me. It wouldn’t make me feel like a victim. I wouldn’t have any animosity toward the team.”
Rodgers is owed $ 59.5 million fully guaranteed for the 2023 season, with $ 58.3 million coming via an option bonus. He would count for $ 15.8 million in 2023 and $ 32.5 million in 2024 to the Jets’ salary cap, according to ESPN, because his bonus money is prorated. According to Over the Cap, the Jets are close to $ 2 million over the cap, and ESPN says the Packers would get hit with a $ 40.3 million “dead” charge in 2023 if they trade Rodgers.
Rodgers’ contract signed in March 2022 technically lasts through the 2026 season, but the money is front- loaded.
The new league year begins on March 15, when free agency begins.
Rodgers would instantly boost the Jets’ profile in the AFC East and the conference and help New York contend for a playoff spot that has eluded them for the last 12 seasons after reaching AFC title games in 2009 and 2010.
The Jets also had discussions with veteran Derek Carr, who has agreed to sign with the New Orleans Saints.
Rodgers, a four- time MVP, has helped the Packers win a Super Bowl and reach five NFC title games in 15 seasons.
If Rodgers joins the Jets, 2021 No. 2 pick Zach Wilson could fit New York’s backup role.
