TOP FIVE PROSPECTS

- Rob Gordon

Excerpted from BaseballHQ.com’s 2016 Minor League Baseball Analyst. To order: baseballhq.com/mlba16.

1. Tyler Glasnow, RHP: Glasnow dominates with a 93- to 95-mph fastball that gets good downhill tilt, thanks to his 6-8 frame. His upper-70s curveball is above average. His changeup remains a work-inprogress but has potential. He has had control problems but also registers strikeouts (11.2 per nine innings in 2015). Glasnow, 22, has a shot to pitch in the rotation this season.

2. Austin Meadows, OF: Meadows is strong and athletic with a simple, compact lefty stroke. He shows good patience at the plate and makes consistent contact. He’s a good runner who swiped a career-best 21 bases last season and covers ground in center field. But a below-average arm could result in a shift to left, where his power profiles well. Meadows, 20, will move to Class AA.

3. Josh Bell, 1B: Bell is an imposing switchhitter with good bat speed and raw power. His level swing plane and great bat control have generated line drives so far, but he has worked on getting more lift in hopes of additional home runs. He hit .317 in 2015 and plays an adequate first base. Bell, 23, will begin at Class AAA but is likely to debut this summer.

4. Jameson Taillon, RHP: Taillon, 24, missed his second consecutive season after Tommy John elbow and hernia surgeries, but when healthy, he is known for a 93- to 97-mph sinking fastball. He also has a good mid-80s power curveball and a changeup that remains inconsistent. He has the size (6-5, 240 pounds) to dominate and gets good downhill tilt. He’ll start at Class AAA.

5. Harold Ramirez, OF: Ramirez started the season on the disabled list but impressed once on the field. Strong and mature, the 21-year-old has an aggressive approach with good pop and good speed on the bases. He has a tendency to be overly aggressive but makes consistent, hard contact. His power has yet to translate, but he will jump to Class AA.
