Oakland Raiders

-

Coach Jack Del Rio suggested there was much more to the the team’s 20-12 loss to the Green Bay Packers than the 73 yards Oakland had in the first half and its 187 yards and five three-and-outs for the game. The Raiders’ only touchdown came on a blocked punt recovered in the end zone.

“We got some good work,” Del Rio said. “We did some good things defensively after the first drive. We got some conditioning there. Everybody came out healthy. We learned some lessons. I think it’s a part of work in the preseason, looking at a lot of different players and the evaluation continues.

“It’s very fruitful from that standpoint. They don’t carry into the regular season. It’s still preseason, and we’re going to get our work done.”

Added QB Derek Carr, who was 9-for-13 for 38 yards, “We obviously want to play better, but at the same time, without gameplanning, you just have to play football. And sometimes it works like last week (31-10 victory against the Arizona Cardinals), and sometimes it doesn’t.” Rookie watch: Cory James,

a fifth-round pick, is looking good as a backup to MLB Ben Heeney. He followed up a solid first game with four tackles (one for a loss) against the Packers. “He’s picking up our scheme very well,” Del Rio said. “He’s a guy that’s going to be productive. He flies around. He gets to the football. We’ve been happy with him.”

Noteworthy: Menelik Wat

son has been starting at right tackle and, if he can stay healthy, is expected to win the battle with

Austin Howard. Since being selected in the second round in 2013, he has played 17 games, starting 12 and missing all of 2015 with an Achilles injury. “He brings a little temperament, little athleticism to the position,” Del Rio said. “Obviously, Austin filled in and did a great job for us last year. That’s been a good competition.”
