Franchise QB Jameis Win

ston came to the defense of rookie K Roberto Aguayo after Saturday’s sloppy performance against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“I had more misses than him,” Winston said.

Winston missed his first six passes in the Buccaneers’ 27-21 victory before finishing 3-for-10 for 28 yards and one touchdown in three possessions. He was intercepted in the first quarter.

Aguayo continued his early struggles, missing two of four field goal attempts, including a 32-yard attempt in the first quarter that sailed wide right. He also missed wide right on a 49-yard attempt, giving him three missed kicks, including a botched extra-point attempt in the preseason opener.

The Bucs traded up into the second round to acquire Aguayo, who had never missed an extra point or field goal attempt from inside 40 yards during a stellar career at Florida State.

Aguayo did convert field goal attempts of 28 and 34 yards and made all three extra point tries against Jacksonville, but that seemed to matter little to coach Dirk Koetter.

“This is the NFL, man,” Koetter told reporters. “They’re paid to make kicks. We’ve got to make the damn field goal.”

Said Winston of Aguayo: “I just think he’s teasing people right now. I know he’s going to produce during the season.” Rookie watch: Top pick CB
