San Diego Padres

-

As part of their push for 2019 or 2020, the Padres are carrying three Rule 5 draftees on their major league roster.

A super-utility role could be the long-term plan for one of them, Allen Cordoba, a 21-year-old who is getting starts in left field and at shortstop.

“He has the ability down the line to be that type of player because he’s that athletic,” manager Andy Green said. Largely a shortstop in the Dominican Summer league and in rookie ball, Cordoba has struggled with throwing accuracy this season, not an unexpected outcome for a player making a three-level jump.

“He really doesn’t have any trouble catching the ball,” Green said. “Just arm slot, throwing across the diamond, has been a little bit of an issue.”

The Padres apparently will retain Cordoba in the big leagues for the season rather than offer him back to the St. Louis Cardinals. A .309 hitter in the minors,

“I threw the pitch. Then, my hand hurt.” Giants left-hander Matt Moore, who opened his glove in time Saturday to catch a line drive off the bat of Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto

he was hitting .283 with three home runs through 46 at-bats with San Diego.

Kyle Lloyd is pushing to join the Padres later this season. The Class AA right-hander required only 94 pitches to throw a no-hitter Saturday. He threw 18 first-pitch strikes and got 17 groundouts.
