Chiefs’ keys to victory: Create more plays on defense. The defense has been abysmal through two games of the 2018 season — it has surrendered 1,016 net yards and 65 points. Kansas City desperately needs more big plays on defense in the way of sacks and turnovers. The Chiefs had a chance to put away the Steelers early, but the defense couldn’t get the job done.
49ers’ keys to victory: Stop Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes. No test has proved to be too big for Mahomes this season. He set the NFL record for touchdown passes through two games with 10, eclipsing a mark formerly held by Drew Bledsoe. If the 49ers can’t find a way to slow him down as he returns to Arrowhead, they’ll stand no chance. They’ve had a tough time slowing down quarterbacks thus far — Kirk Cousins and Matthew Stafford have aired it out in back-to-back weeks.
Matchup to watch: Chiefs DE Chris Jones vs. 49ers RGs Mike Person, Josh Garnett and Najee Toran. Going against Jones has proved difficult for opposing teams. Jones sports a slimmeddown frame for the 2018 season, which has improved his quickness off the snap. San Francisco has some injury issues at right guard and has a choice of trotting out two players dealing with injury (Person and Garnett) or an undrafted rookie (Toran). None of these choices seems ideal.
Who wins? Betting against this Kansas City offense isn’t smart until a team proves the Chiefs can be stopped. The 49ers, though they’re improved, certainly don’t seem like the team to do it.
