EXPECTED KENTUCKY DERBY FIELD

- Jason Frakes

Here are the 20 horses expected to run May 4 in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. They are ranked by points on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard. in 2000 and Empire Maker in 2003).

Trainer: Bill Mott. He’s 0-for-8 in the Derby, with his best finish coming last year with Hofburg (seventh).

Jockey: Jose Ortiz. He’s 0-for-4 in the Derby. His best finish was last year with Good Magic (second).

Record: 3-0-0 in four starts Last race: Won the Grade 2 Wood Memorial by 1 lengths over Tax on April 6 at Aqueduct. Running style: Not much speed from the gate. Likely in the middle of the pack or toward the back early in the race. What they’re saying: “He’s had two races, and a lot of handicappers think the third race off the bench is the best, so I hope that group of handicappers is absolutely right,” Mott said. “I think (the Wood) effort puts him at or near the top of the list (of Derby contenders).” 0-for-6 in the Derby, his best finish coming with Soul of the Matter (fifth in 1994).

Jockey: Mike Smith. He’s 2for-24 in the Derby, winning with Giacomo (2005) and Justify (2018).

Record: 3-3-1 in seven starts Last race: Won the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby by a length over Improbable on April 13 at Oaklawn Park.

Running style: Up front, could be the one to catch out of the gate.

What they’re saying: little spot to get out, and then he gets into that comfortable rhythm. His cruising speed just naturally takes him up there. I basically just try to stay out of his way. He’s doing it so easy, I’m better off letting him than not.”
