Broncos’ keys to victory: Denver can’t afford to fall behind early. Broncos RBs Melvin Gordon and Phillip Lindsay need to lead the way with productive gains on first and second down, setting up QB Drew Lock with third-and-manageable situations. The offensive line can help remedy too many early three-and-outs by opening up better running lanes, which will also help the passing game. If Miami turns its focus to Denver’s rushing attack, Lock will be able to use play-action.
Dolphins’ keys to victory: With RB Myles Gaskin still on injured reserve, Miami will need someone to step up and lead the backfield to take some pressure off rookie QB Tua Tagovailoa. The Dolphins should consider featuring Matt Breida against a Broncos defensive line that has struggled defending the run in recent weeks.
Matchup to watch: Dolphins WR DeVante Parker vs. Broncos CB Bryce Callahan. Parker has been Miami’s best wide receiver, and Callahan has been Denver’s best cornerback, playing at a borderline Pro Bowl level. Parker can play outside and in the slot, as can Callahan. If Callahan is able to shut down Parker, the entire Dolphins’ offense could struggle.
Who wins? The Broncos are usually tough to beat at home but have a losing record (1-3) at Mile High this season. Lock and Denver’s entire offense have had moments of strong play, but the team’s performances have been inconsistent. Miami has confidence and momentum, and Tagovailoa appears to have what it takes to become a franchise QB.
