INDIANAPOLIS
QB battle still raging: The Colts were encouraged following their preseason opener when QBs Jacob Eason and Sam Ehlinger showed promise amid the battle for the backup job while Carson Wentz recovers from foot surgery. That development took a step back in the preseason game against the Vikings. Neither Eason nor Ehlinger looked the part of a competent starter. Ehlinger threw two interceptions and finished the game with a 36.2 passer rating. Eason failed to throw with anticipation and struggled with varying his velocity. He had 132 passing yards on 27 attempts. Both players will finish the competition in the final preseason game against the Lions. Wentz returned to practice Aug. 23 and could be ready for Week 1.
Rookie watch
The Colts finally got a chance to see first-round pick and DE Kwity Paye take the field against the Vikings. It’s no surprise he took advantage of his reps with the starters as he recorded his first sack. He showed off plenty of burst and excellent hand usage. Expect Paye to be among the starters on the defensive line when the regular season opens.
