SAN FRANCISCO

- – Kyle Madson, Niners Wire

Storyline of the week

Wide receiver revival: The 49ers’ receiving corps had a ton of question marks going into training camp. Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk sat atop the depth chart, but after that it was anyone’s guess as to who would join them on the roster. Injuries have again derailed Jalen Hurd in his quest to make the team, but Trent Sherfield, Mohamed Sanu and Jauan Jennings have all stepped up throughout camp to develop the makings of a legitimate receiving corps. It looks like the Sherfield-Sanu-Jennings trio will provide some quality depth.

Rookie watch

There’s an interesting conundrum developing for San Francisco around RB Elijah Mitchell. The 2021 sixth-round draft pick was putting together a nice training camp and looked on his way to a roster spot before a hip strain prior to the first preseason exhibition game sidelined him. San Francisco may be forced to either keep him or cut him without ever having seen him play in a game. Keeping him would mean cutting RB Wayne Gallman or RB JaMycal Hasty, both of whom have done well in training camp.
