LA CHARGERS

- Storyline of the Week

Who has the leg up? Almost all of the starting jobs were already set in stone coming into the summer, with the exception of the team’s kicking duel between Michael Badgley and Tristan Vizcaino. Vizcaino had the advantage for the majority of the month, but it wasn’t until last week when the needle started to tilt toward Badgley. In the preseason finale against the Seahawks, the Chargers’ lack of offensive production prevented the coaching staff from getting a better evaluation of the two. Badgley has hit on 80% of his field goal attempts in the NFL (52 of 65); Vizcaino has only attempted three.

Rookie watch

Fifth-round pick LB Nick Niemann showed that he’s capable of playing the position at this level. In each of the three preseason games, Niemann was the team’s leading tackler. He went on to finish the slate with 28. Flying all around the field, Niemann showed the ability to make stops inside and outside the tackles and the athleticism and instincts to make an impact against the pass.
