Storyline of the week

QB competition is over: The Saints have named Jameis Winston their starting quarterback for Week 1’s season kickoff with the Green Bay Packers, according to news media reports. The news isn’t surprising given how well he played in the preseason. While Taysom Hill made an admirable effort in pushing him for the job, Winston’s greater talent and decision-making ability won the day . Other position battles sewn up this week included fullback (where Alex Armah Jr. got the nod) and punt

Blake Gillikin sitting on top).

Rookie watch

Losing the third preseason game to Hurricane Ida makes it tough to evaluate the Saints rookie class. DE Payton Turner and LB Pete Werner, their top two draft picks, each missed more than two weeks of training camp and didn’t play in the two Saints exhibition games, though Werner has since returned to practice. CB Paulson Adebo, a third-round pick, had an opportunity to start in Week 1 if he outplayed veteran teammate Ken Crawley in the final push to the regular season at press time.
