PITTSBURGH
Storyline of the week
The quarterback battle that wasn’t: QB Dwayne Haskins went into the Steelers’ final preseason game as the starter, clinging to one final chance to win the backup quarterback spot to Ben Roethlisberger. With a big game, Haskins had a shot to jump over Mason Rudolph on the depth chart as Rudolph sat out the matchup with the Panthers. Haskins didn’t put on much of a showing and despite playing almost the entire game thanks to an injury to Joshua Dobbs, completing 9 of 16 passes for 108 yards, a touchdown and an interception. He ran for 6 yards. His rating for the game, according to ESPN, was 71.9.
Rookie watch
OT Dan Moore Jr. may just be the starting right tackle in Week 1. Moore has shown steady improvement over the course of training camp and the preseason and has established he can line up at left or right tackle. Projected starting RT Zach Banneris, still dealing with the effects of a torn ACL last season, opened the door for Moore, a three-year starter at Texas A&M.
