NFL WEEK 18 MATCHUPS

- Jeff Risdon, Lions Wire

Vikings (7-9) at Lions (11-5)

Sunday, 1 p.m. ET, Ford Field, Detroit

TV: Fox

Spread (BetMGM):

Lions by 5.5

Vikings’ keys to victory: Quarterback play has been rough, with rookie Jaren Hall and vet Nick Mullens struggling with misreads and giveaways. The Vikings have a massive advantage with WR Justin Jefferson and WR Jordan Addison against a Lions secondary that struggled against the deep ball. There will be chances for deep connections and they must take advantage. On defense, limiting yards after the catch and playing well in the middle of the field is imperative. Quick pressure from impressive rookie LB Ivan Pace Jr. can create takeaway opportunities. Special teams must be prepared for the Lions’ trickery, too.

Lions’ keys to victory: The Lions clinched the division title in the Week 16 win in Minnesota but still should be plenty motivated after a controversial loss to Dallas. In Week 16, a play-making defense keyed by S Ifeatu Melifonwu made the Vikings pay for mistakes. A smart game plan from offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, one that exploits mismatches with record-setting rookie TE Sam LaPorta and physical RB David Montgomery, would help.

Matchup to watch: Vikings edge rusher Danielle Hunter vs. Lions RT Penei Sewell. Hunter’s quickness and ability to win inside or outside can give Sewell trouble, but the Lions standout is coming off a great game against Micah Parsons in Dallas.

Who wins? The Lions’ pride will shine, even in a game the Vikings need to win a lot more than Detroit does. Watch for the potential of the Lions to rest a couple of key players, however.

Lions, 26-21
