Keys to victory
Center field: “Oh, yeah, I’m back.” That’s what Byron Buxton said to a crowd of fans one night at TwinsFest in January. Buxton, who had offseason knee surgery, is expected to return to center field this season after not playing a single inning in the field last year. He served as the team’s DH in 80 games. The onetime Platinum Glove Awardwinning outfielder has had health issues throughout his career. In nine major league seasons, he’s only played 100-plus games once in 2017. The Twins are at their best with him roaming center. But for insurance, the Twins traded for Manuel Margot for depth.
Riding the wave: The Twins snapped their 18game postseason losing streak last year – and won their first postseason series since 2002. So, what’s next? They reduced payroll and lost a lot of key contributors from last year’s playoff team. Gone are outfielders Michael A. Taylor and Joey Gallo, pitchers Kenta Maeda and Dallas Keuchel and infielder Donovan Solano. The most notable departure? Sonny Gray, who was the team’s top performer in 2023. So instead of hiring big guns in free agency, the Twins will rely on youngsters like Royce Lewis and Edouard Julien to step up. It also helps to play in a weak AL Central Division.
Overcoming big loss:
Apart from Gray, who finished second in the AL Cy Young race, the Twins are largely returning with the same rotation. It’s fronted by All-Star RHP Pablo López. But will the new-look bullpen need to be better? And will the offense need to step up?
