She is a spoiled socialite who comes between Montgomery Clift, a poor but handsome fellow working in his rich relative’s factory, and his pregnant girlfriend, an assembly-line worker played by Shelley Winters. Taylor and Clift’s sizzling on-screen chemistry was as powerful as their longlastin­g friendship in real life. Their passionate kiss, filmed in tight close-up, was the height of eroticism during that era.
