(1951) Based on Theodore Dreiser’s An American Tragedy, this was the first real adult role of her career. She is a spoiled socialite who comes between Montgomery Clift, a poor but handsome fellow working in his rich relative’s factory, and his pregnant girlfriend, an assembly-line worker played by Shelley Winters. Taylor and Clift’s sizzling on-screen chemistry was as powerful as their longlasting friendship in real life. Their passionate kiss, filmed in tight close-up, was the height of eroticism during that era.
