(1957) Taylor played yet another vain Southern belle and again is embroiled in a passionate romance with Montgomery Clift in this pre-Civil War saga. He’s a teacher from Indiana enthralled by her. They marry, and she takes him back to her home in NewOrleans, where she grows increasingly unstable. She’s plagued by events from her past and has traces of insanity in her antebellum lineage. Though solid, it’s not one of her best roles. Still, it resulted in an Oscar nomination. During the filming of
Raintree County, Clift suffered a near-fatal, disfiguring car accident on his way home from a party at Taylor’s house.
