Wife of erratic pilot thanks those on flight

-

The wife of the Jetblue pilot whose frightening behavior forced an emergency landing said Sunday that the family is focusing on his recovery and will not be giving interviews.

Connye Osbon, in a statement released through the airline, thanked the crew and passengers for the “effective yet compassionate handling of the situation.” She said the family believed Osbon wasn’t intentionally trying to be violent.

Clayton Osbon became incoherent on a flight Tuesday from New York to Las Vegas. Co-pilot Jason Dowd locked him out of the cockpit, and he was restrained by passengers. The plane landed in Texas; Osbon faces federal charges.

California battered by spring storm

A spring storm dumped snow in the mountains above Los Angeles, drove huge waves onto California beaches and delayed the rescue of sailors injured on a racing yacht.

The Coast Guard rescued two injured sailors Sunday afternoon when a boat reached them about 200 miles off the coast, Petty Officer Caleb Critchfield said. Two others with minor injuries continued sailing to San Francisco. The Clipper 11-12 Round the World Yacht Race said the Geraldton Western Australia was hit by a wave Saturday, knocking out its steering mounting.

The National Weather Service said 15-foot swells were reported Sunday at Hermosa Beach. A winter weather advisory was issued for the mountains, with 55-mph gusts and snow accumulating at elevations above 4,500 feet.
