Wallace remembered as one of the greats

-

Although expected for a while, I’m still saddened by the death of Mike Wallace (“Wallace’s death marks end of oldschool era,” Cover Story, Monday).

I became a fan of his as a child in the late 1940s and have remained one ever since. More than anything, he was the “Joe Friday” of interviewers. He wanted “just the facts.” And most of the time, with unmatched perseverance, he got them.

He, along with Ed Murrow and Walter Cronkite, created modern television journalism. Thousands of shady characters breathe easily because they know that Wallace won’t be walking into their offices. But with the example he set, they may not breathe easily for long. Such is his legacy.
