USA TODAY US Edition
-Idol’s most successful non-winner, Jennifer Hudson, is scheduled to perform tonight on American Idol (Fox, 8 ET/PT). Many of the contestants will take her appearance as proof that you don’t have to win to be a star. They should be reminded that Hudson is the exception, not the rule — and that even victory and talent won’t guarantee success. You also need good management, good timing, and more than a few good career breaks.
-Tho-gh it still has its amusing moments, 30 Rock (NBC, 8:30 ET/PT) is feeling fairly worn out these days. Even so, it’s worth watching tonight just for the return of one of the show’s best guests: Broadway great Elaine Stritch as Jack’s mother.
-So here’s the bargain you have to make with Touch (Fox, 9 ET/PT). You have to decide whether an interesting premise and a terrific performance from Kiefer Sutherland can make up for an increasing reliance on contrivance and coincidence, to the extent that they’re undercutting that premise. Tonight’s a good test, because the connections — and Jake’s ability to spot them in advance — defy not just belief, but a willingness to suspend disbelief.
