Social programs overreach
USA TODAY reader Steve Maersch’s letter states, “If the Supreme Court declares (President) Obama’s health plan unconstitutional, it could also declare Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and a host of other government programs unconstitutional” (“Uninsured individuals exert too much influence over market,” April 6).
I, for one, hope they do exactly that. Nowhere in Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution is Congress granted the power to take tax dollars from one group of people in order to provide another group of people benefits ad nauseam.
Furthermore, the 10th Amendment clearly states: “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people.”
