Russell tops Fish in U.S. Men’s Clay Court

Qualifier Michael Russell took advantage of ailing Mardy Fish for a 6-3, 6-1 tennis victory Thursday in the second round of the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championsh­ip in Houston. Fish, the top seed in the tournament and ninth-ranked player in the world, was playing for the first time since pulling out of Davis Cup competitio­n against France for what he called a health issue.

-Top seed Caroline Wozniacki reached the third round of the e-boks Open in Copenhagen on Thursday by cruising past Pauline Parmentier 6-2, 6-1. The two-time defending champion broke Parmentier twice in the first set and three times in the second to clinch the victory. Wozniacki will face Alize Cornet in the next round.

-J-lia Goerges and Dominika Cibulkova advanced to the Barcelona Open quarterfin­als Thursday. Goerges beat Garbine Muguruza Blanco 7-5, 5-7, 6-2. Cibulkova rallied for a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory vs. Klara Zakopalova.

-Jeremy Chardy upset top seed Florian Mayer 6-3, 6-1 Thursday in the second round of the Grand Prix Hassan II in Casablanca, Morocco. Mayer won four of 19 points on his second serve and was broken six times by Chardy, who will face Albert Ramos in the quarterfin­als. Seventh seed Ramos defeated Victor Hanescu 6-2, 6-4.
