FCC imposes $25,000 fine on Google

- From staff and Associated Press reports

Google deliberately impeded the Federal Communications Commission’s probe into how the tech firm used data gathered as part of its Street View project, the FCC says. The FCC notified Google that it has proposed the company be fined $25,000; Google can appeal. In a statement, Google said, “We worked in good faith to answer the FCC’S questions throughout the inquiry, and we’re pleased that they have concluded that we complied with the law.” The investigation didn’t produce evidence Google had misused data gathered during its Street View project. In the process of capturing images, Google’s Wi-fi-ready Street View vehicles captured passwords and e-mails. Google acknowledged that its cars captured data, but said it was accidental. The Federal Trade Commission dropped its probe in 2010.
