No plea deal so far for Tigers’ Young

-

For now, prosecutors are not offering a plea deal to Detroit Tigers outfielder Delmon Young, accused of making anti-Semitic remarks during a fight outside a New York hotel.

Young was briefly in a Manhattan court Tuesday for an update on his hate-crime case.

Young is charged with an aggravated harassment misdemeanor after a confrontation with four men April 27 in New York. The charge is punishable by up to a year in jail.

According to court documents, Young and the men exchanged words and Young allegedly yelled, “You bunch of (expletive) Jews.” Young pushed and shoved one of the men and tackled him, causing minor injuries to the man’s elbow, according to the documents. The Tigers were in the city to play the New York Yankees.

Major League Baseball suspended Young for seven days without pay because of the incident.

Defense attorney Daniel Ollen has said Young reacted to something that was said to him.

Young, who has said he regrets what happened, declined to comment Tuesday. He is free on $5,000 bond and due back in court Aug. 2.

Young was the designated hitter in Tuesday’s game at the Boston Red Sox.
