Gov.: Schilling’s wrong to blame state

-

Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee said his comments about the financial health of Curt Schilling’s video-gaming company didn’t hurt the firm, and he disputed that the state reneged on a deal for tax credits. The former major league pitcher told The Providence Journal that the state promised and did not deliver film tax credits for 38 Studios and refused to allow the company to defer a $1.1 million payment, forcing it to miss payroll. Schilling said Chafee’s comments that the state was trying to keep 38 Studios solvent were “devastating.” He said a video game publisher backed out of a deal to finance a new game. 38 Studios, which was lured to Rhode Island from Massachusetts in 2010 with a $75 million loan guarantee, laid off its entire workforce last week.
