‘Hot, talented’ is the designer style at gala
Mary-kate and Ashley Olsen win top prize; Depp is Fashion Icon

Johnny Depp, the sartorially idiosyncratic star of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, earned the Fashion Icon prize at Monday’s Council of Fashion Designers of America awards gala, held at Lincoln Center.
Depp didn’t attend, but CFDA president and designer Diane von Furstenberg summed up the honoree: “Hot and talented.” Director John Waters accepted for the actor, whom he described jokingly as “the star who made dirty hair fashionable.”
Designers and A-list celebrities Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen scored the big win of the night, beating out Marc Jacobs and Proenza Schouler designers, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, for the womenswear designer of the year award.
The event attracted an offbeat roster of attendees, culled from the worlds of comedy, style and entertainment. Saturday Night Live’s Seth Meyers hosted the event, while Jessica Chastain, Zoe Saldana, Sophia Bush, Mandy Moore, Matt Bomer and Julianne Hough attended. They were joined by a who’swho of the fashion set: Carolina Herrera, Derek Lam, Jason Wu and Prabal Gurung, among many others.
Hough, who stars in the upcoming Rock of Ages, sported a red KaufmanFranco gown and chirped glowingly about boyfriend Ryan Seacrest. Does Seacrest approve of her outfits? “He does. He has a really good eye,” she said.
Saldana teamed up with Gurung to put together a look for the night. “We tried on a few dresses. He’ll let me keep it if I insist. He lets me keep everything,” she said.
Bomer has a busy summer: He stars in the hotly anticipated male stripper flick Magic Mike, and his hit show White Collar returns in July.
