Storm drenches Minn. city, kills animals
Animals escaped from a Duluth, Minn., zoo and some drowned as the city struggled with a torrential rain that poured up to 10 inches of water down the city’s steep hills, overwhelming its culvert system.
Police caught a polar bear that escaped the Lake Superior Zoo. Several sheep, goats and a donkey were killed. Zoo spokeswoman Susan Wolniakowski said no dangerous animals left the grounds.
No serious human injuries were reported in the city of 86,000, but an 8-year-old boy was swept about six blocks through a culvert. He emerged with scrapes and bruises.
