Support for nuclear Iran is irresponsible, foolish

-

You recently ran one of the most disingenuous, misguided commentaries ever to grace the opinion pages of USA TODAY. It demonstrated a lack of understanding of the adversarial relationship between Iran and the West. The Iranian regime’s pursuit of nuclear capability comes with a total disregard for life that is so typical of radical Islamists (“Iranian Nukes? No Worries,” The Forum, Monday).

Iran’s leaders have repeatedly called for Israel’s destruction. Also, Israel has been recognized by a member of Congress as a “one bomb” country, meaning a single bomb could destroy it. Furthermore, Iran’s leaders have stated that Iran would merely suffer “damages” from an Israeli retaliation, making a nuclear strike worth the price.

Currently, the major threat to the security of Iranian people is not from Israel or the United States, but rather from backward-thinking clerics who have been suffocating their people’s freedom since rising to power in 1979. Arming such a regime with nuclear weapons will not lead to stability, because stability is not what the Iranian government seeks. Joseph R. Furman
