Saints’ Vitt wins admission from NFL

-

New Orleans Saints interim coach Joe Vitt won an admission from the NFL on Wednesday. After a note on an alleged bounty ledger belonging to Saints players included a note suggesting Vitt contributed $5,000 for a bounty on Brett Favre was used in the NFL’s post-appeals briefing Monday regarding suspended players Jonathan Vilma, Anthony Hargrove, Scott Fujita and Will Smith, Vitt released a statement saying, “The NFL never accused me of such conduct because I did not pledge any money for any incentive, pay for performance, bounty or any other alleged program in connection with any game, including the 2010 NFC Championship.” The NFL confirmed Wednesday that Vitt was correct. So why was the ledger used as evidence against the players but not Vitt? An NFL official told USA TODAY Sports there was no other corroborating evidence showing Vitt offered money for an injury to Favre and Vitt denied the allegation, so the NFL didn’t factor it into his punishment. Vitt, however, remains suspended for the first six games of the season for his involvement in the scandal.
