National League notes

-

Arizona: RH reliever David Hernandez agreed to a two-year contract extension, the team announced without revealing financial details. Hernandez, 27, is 0-1 with two saves and a 2.90 ERA in 33 appearances this year.

Atlanta: RH Tim Hudson is experiencing the same discomfort in his left ankle that has bothered him for a month, but he will try to pitch through the pain instead of having a surgical procedure to remove bone spurs that would sideline him for two months. Hudson plans to postpone surgery until the offseason.

Chicago: Manager Dale Sveum had expressed doubts about RH Randy Wells’ rotation job after Wells’ last outing, but the pitcher will start Tuesday at home against the Mets. Wells is 0-2 with a 6.57 ERA in three starts this season.

Cincinnati: CF Drew Stubbs (strained left side muscle) is 1-for-10 through three rehab games for low Class A Dayton (Ohio). He played a full nine innings Sunday.

Colorado: Jonathan Herrera came off the disabled list Friday and took over as starting shortstop for the next three games. Marco Scutaro, who had played shortstop since Troy Tulowitzki went down with a groin injury, shifted to second base. Herrera had been out since May 23 with a right hamstring strain. Houston: RHP Bud Norris (knee sprain) is expected to be activated from the disabled list this week after a successful rehab start Saturday. He threw 75 pitches for Class AAA Oklahoma City, giving up two runs in five innings. Los Angeles: RH Blake Hawksworth pitched a scoreless inning Sunday for high Class A Rancho Cucamonga (Calif.) in his second rehab appearance. His rehab assignment will likely be lengthy, manager Don Mattingly said. Hawksworth had arthroscopic right elbow surgeries in January and February. Miami: SS Jose Reyes was shaken up after making a spectacular tumbling catch in the outfield Sunday. After colliding with CF Scott Cousins, Reyes grabbed his right leg. He was examined on the field by a trainer but stayed in the game. Milwaukee: RHP Marco Estrada (right quadriceps strain) will return to the rotation Tuesday. Estrada has been out for a month, and he allowed one run in eight innings over two rehab starts for Class AAA Nashville. . . . 3B Aramis Ramirez (sore quadriceps) was used as the designated hitter Sunday as manager Ron Roenicke helped him rest the injury. It was the Brewers’ last interleague game. New York: RH closer Frank Francisco, who caused a stir last week by calling the Yankees “chickens,” went on the disabled list because of a left side muscle strain. RH reliever Ramon Ramirez, out since May 31 with a strained right hamstring, was activated from the disabled list. Philadelphia: Chase Utley (chronic left knee tendinitis) played eight innings at second base Saturday for high Class A Clearwater (Fla.), and he could return from the disabled list Wednesday, according to Csnphilly.com. Through nine games for Clearwater, Utley was 5-for-32 (.156) with one homer. Pittsburgh: RHP Jeff Karstens will come off the disabled list today to start the series opener at Philadelphia. He was sidelined for nearly two months, first with a sore shoulder and then with a hip flexor injury. RHP Brad Lincoln, 2-2 with a 6.08 ERA in five starts, was bumped to the bullpen. St. Louis: RHP Chris Carpenter, who has been building strength in his ailing right shoulder, will throw to hitters for a second time in Miami today. He might be ready for a minor league rehab assignment soon. San Diego: RHP Anthony Bass went on the disabled list retroactive to June 21 because of right shoulder inflammation. 2B Andy Parrino was activated from the DL after missing three weeks with a right hand injury. The team didn’t immediately announce a starting pitcher to fill Bass’ rotation spot Tuesday. San Francisco: C Buster Posey hit his team-leading 10th homer Sunday, his second in two games. That leaves the Padres as the only team with no players with doubledigit homers. Washington:

3B Ryan Zimmerman (right shoulder inflammation) could get a cortisone shot, and he might be headed for the disabled list again in coming days, manager Davey Johnson said.
