Angry NFL fans cry foul

-

We invest hours of our time to watch a game, and I, for one, am boycotting all NFL games until real refs are back on the job. The NFL wasted my time Monday night, and infuriated me, too! Fans deserve far better.

Any sane business person runs his or her business in a way that balances the contributions of shareholders, customers, employees and their community. They manage their business for the long term. The NFL is making a joke of its product, affecting the basic integrity of the game.

Arrogant and thoughtless behavior makes the league look foolish, greedy and careless about what its customers think. Unfortunately, there is a generation of business leaders who have been taught their only responsibility is to shareholders and to maximize profits without regard to the longer-term needs of the businesses. It’s a dumb way to run a business, including the NFL.

If the outcome of a game comes down to a last-second, Hail Mary pass, then many, many bad decisions brought the team to that point. A game should never be reduced to chance; you either win decisively or not. Blaming the refs is valid, but so is blame for 60 minutes of lackluster play by both teams. Plenty of blame to go around.

It’s ironic that the referee situation will probably increase the viewership in the short term in the same way everyone turns on the news to watch a train wreck. But, in the long term, it must be damaging the reputation of the owners and commissioner.
