IOC urged to test earlier

- Compiled by John Tkach from staff and wire reports

The World Anti-Doping Agency wants the International Olympic Committee to start testing athletes earlier ahead of Games to catch drug cheats. A WADA panel that monitored the anti-doping program in London suggested that the IOC adopt more intelligent testing as far in advance of competition as possible instead of more tests. The panel’s report, published Tuesday, said it expected the IOC to reanalyze some London samples during the eight-year period they are stored. The WADA-appointed observers praised the anti-doping program run by the IOC, London organizing committee and UK Anti-Doping. Eight athletes tested positive, two from in-competition samples, from an Olympicrecord 5,132 tests conducted after the athletes village opened. Women’s shot put winner Nadzeya Ostap

chuk of Belarus was the only medalist disqualified.

NORTH CAROLINA: WILLIAMS’ KIDNEY TUMOR IS BENIGN

The tumor surgically removed from

Roy Williams’ right kidney was not cancerous, the University of North Carolina said in a statement Tuesday. The school said tests on the Hall of Fame men’s basketball coach determined it was a benign growth often indistinguishable from kidney cancer on X-rays. Williams also has a tumor on his left kidney, but doctors said there was a good chance that growth was the same as the one removed last week, the school said. Doctors plan to biopsy that tumor next week and won’t perform a second surgery if the tumor is the same. The school has said Williams is expected to be back for the start of preseason practice Oct. 13. The ex-wife of former Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt filed a motion to set aside the couple’s divorce settlement, claiming he committed fraud by vastly understating the baseball team’s value. Jamie

McCourt’s attorney, Bertram Fields, said Tuesday that attempts to modify what he called a “massive imbalance” in the settlement failed, forcing her to return to court. The motion filed Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court claims Frank McCourt misrepresented the couple’s Dodgers assets as worth less than $300 million before their divorce in 2010. The team sold in May 2012 for $2 billion to a group that includes Basketball Hall of Famer Magic

Johnson. Representatives for Frank McCourt could not immediately be reached for comment.
