Packers gear up for sale
GREEN B AY, WIS. When it comes to Green Bay Packers memorabilia, Christopher York had it all: jerseys, footballs, autographs, furniture and more.
And when the tax man came, he took it all.
Now the Internal Revenue Service is putting York’s collection on the auction block to settle a tax debt of almost $200,000.
The collection includes official footballs from Super Bowl XXXI and Super Bowl XXXII, an autographed Reggie White jersey, team photos and plaques from 1966 and 1967, an autographed photo of Bart Starr from Super Bowl I, and a 1931 player contract signed by Curly Lambeau.
Everything will be auctioned off Nov. 1 at a hotel in the Milwaukee suburb of Pewaukee, Wis. Potential bidders can inspect the memorabilia Oct. 31 at the hotel or starting at 8:30 a.m. on the day of the auction.
York, a onetime resident of Delavan, Wis., about 50 miles southwest of Milwaukee, could not be reached for comment. IRS officials declined to comment. The IRS filed a lien against York’s personal belongings in January at the Walworth County Courthouse, estimating his tax debt at $187,949. No estimates have been released on the value of his Packers collection.
According to the IRS, the collection also includes bobble-heads of Brett Favre and Vince Lombardi, framed photos of many team legends, miniature Lambeau Field models and such items as Packers baseball caps, beer steins, Christmas holiday lights and a hobbyhorse.
