CRITIC’S CORNER

- Robert Bianco

RECTIFY SUNDANCE, 9 ET/PT

This excellent, brooding series returns for its second season, with Daniel (Aden Young) still adjusting to his release from death row — and his family and community still adjusting to him.

DOMINION SYFY, 9 ET/PT

This Syfy sequel to the movie

Legion is the kind of series best watched with the volume muted and your brain off. Silence will allow you to enjoy the sight of good and evil angels flying and fighting without actually having to hear any of the badly written and delivered dialogue that surrounds them. (Pity any actor who has to say lines like “There is no me without you.”) And a thought-free approach will stop you from obsessing over why an American city would suddenly turn into ancient Rome, or why the producers assume we’ve all seen Legion and we’re all on board for the cumbersome back story. Because both are a mystery to me.

ROOKIE BLUE ABC, 9 ET/PT

ABC launches the third season of this Canadian import with a double run that traps Andy and Dov in a diner holdup while introducing Oliver Becker as a tough new inspector and Matthew Owen Murray as a new and immediately disliked rookie.

Blue isn’t exactly compelling television, but it’s competent — which places it a step above its returning lead-in, Black Box, and its Syfy time-slot rival, Dominion.
